Black Sails

Draping over the sky
with dark shadows
that shame the onyx night drawing nigh

solemn and slow
bearing news of fear
to the quivering heartbeats down below

there they hold
in the frigid air
a sad and a most fatal tale we’re told

“gather round
ye hearts of men
and hear the beating, dreary sound

of lives all lost
to the siren call
in the chilly, bitter waves were tossed

no space of time
no will to bend
falling in a dream-like trance, sublime!”

and so they plot
and chart the course
the sails allure with a chill are sought

and every mind
turns away in fear
to cause the curious eye to blind

yet not a soul fight
the charm of the dark
or the coldest winds in the eery night
